What is the International Distal Bypass Workshop?
The Japanese Society for Vascular Surgery holds a Distal Bypass Workshop every year for Japanese vascular surgeons and cardiovascular surgeons. In addition, we held the Distal Bypass Workshop in Asia (DBWA) in 2019 with the aim of promoting distal bypass in Asia. Now that the COVID-19 pandemic has almost subsided, we will expand on the previous workshops and hold the International Distal Bypass Workshop.
This workshop was planned with the aim of resolving the current extreme shortage of surgeons capable of performing peripheral bypass surgery around the world and training young surgeons who will be responsible for performing high-quality peripheral arterial surgery.
The workshop will be conducted over two days, entirely in English, by inviting 10 of Japan's leading vascular surgeons with experience in peripheral bypass surgery as lecturers. The lectures will include a combination of lectures, case study meetings, and dry and wet labs. Peripheral bypass surgery is an extremely difficult operation in recent severe cases, many of which are complicated by diabetes and dialysis. It also requires extensive knowledge and judgment in determining whether surgery is appropriate, selecting the surgical procedure, postoperative management, graft stenosis that can occur from the early to late stages of surgery, and the underlying pathological or fluid dynamics. As such, it is important to have lectures and table discussions to cultivate practical knowledge and judgment, in addition to the surgical techniques, and the workshop will be held over two full days, from Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening.
