Toyoda Gosei and IBM launch the medical simulator “Super BEAT” using e-Rubber

BM Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ota-ku, Tokyo, President: Eiyo Park) and Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Kiyosu City, Aichi Prefecture, President: Naoki Miyazaki) are working to improve the health of the heart with e-Rubber, a next-generation rubber that runs on electricity. We have jointly developed and launched "SupeR BEAT," a surgical training simulator that reproduces heartbeats.

As surgeries become more sophisticated in the medical field, ensuring safety is becoming more important, and demand for surgical training simulators is increasing. In particular, under the cardiovascular surgery specialist system, which recognizes doctors who have completed a certain level of training as specialists, training using simulators has become compulsory. Against this background, our company and Toyoda Gosei have been collaborating since November 2017 with the aim of developing and disseminating a practical simulator that will help improve the techniques of cardiac surgeons.

The newly developed SuperR BEAT can faithfully reproduce the heartbeat during surgery by using e-Rubber, which expands and contracts in response to voltage on and off. The built-in software allows you to combine dozens of beat patterns to simulate various situations such as complex heartbeats caused by arrhythmia, tachycardia, fibrillation, and rapid heartbeats in children, making it extremely useful for actual coronary artery bypass surgery. It can even recreate a stressful surgical environment.

Both companies will continue to promote medical-engineering collaboration and contribute to the development of medical care.
